Hope that you all enjoy reading it as much as I did. All the Best, Robert ------------------------------------ Robert, i'm just in beijing for a couple of days. i'm leaving tonight for the last leg of this research trip with dr. harris. it's going extremely well. wow robert, the places we went to, the monasteries.. incredible. the fourth patriarch created the whole idea of having zen monasteries right, before him it was one to one, masters living in huts and such. and his idea was to build them in these high mountain plateaus where they were remote but yet had the land to be self sufficient. well some of these places are still up and running. master empty cloud revitalized them in the forties, they crashed in the sixties, and now there are a handful of his students, now "the masters", still around that are behind this new revitalization that's happening. robert it's so exciting. i bumped into monks and nuns i met as far back as three years ago all the way down south. they've been here and there with this master or that. there is a distinct core to it. everyone is connecting, a community is there. still in the early stages i guess, from a broader standpoint. but the energy is incredible and the monasteries that are being rebuilt are awesome. some of them are working farms, like i'd mentioned. even one with a tea plantation. and the fourth and fifth and sixth patriarch's temples are all being rebuilt. you can visit the cave where hongren took the robe and bowl. and the place on the mountain side above the temple where he gave teachings to his disciples, at the monastery where huineng wrote his famous poem. all these places are being revitalized. some into training monasteries, some into more open places for lay people to visit and stay in and catering to that community. some though, as i said, are just straight up training monasteries. for lack of a better word... 'hard core'. sticks and stones patriarch zen. incredible. hope all is well and quiet there in yellow springs. talk to you soon, amituofo, ted From marcuswoo at gmail.com Sat Aug 26 18:47:28 2006 From: marcuswoo at gmail.com (Marcus Woo) Date: Sat Aug 26 18:54:53 2006 Subject: [Buddhist-india] Message from Tibet Message-ID: <391802850608261547q4d8c0f4m29a0de53efd194c2@mail.gmail.com> Dear friends, Its been a long while since I've heard from most of you so I thought I'd send out a "check in" of sorts :) Right now I'm teaching English in Amdo, Tibet in a small town called Rebgong. It is the beginning of another adventure and I am enthusiastic about the weeks to come. Before departing I wanted to share with you the attached photo which was taken at Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche?s teachings in MA this summer. There were quite a few people there who had been with the program in India, so we had all had a photo taken with Rinpoche. For me this picture is a reminder of all the fine people who have shared some amazing experiences in Bodh Gaya. I hope that you enjoy it and will recognize some old friends. It looks like you've found yourself some amazing work. I am working at a wilderness therapy program in southwestern Utah--camping in the desert 8 days at a time. Surprising how much of the mindfulness we studied in India comes to play when you're dealing with rebellious teenagers! I've got kind of a blog, too, if anyone's curious: www.livejournal.com/users/pifflespeck/ It's a cool job for people who like the outdoors & can backpack pretty strongly. Surprising how many other staff are interested in Buddhism/alternative spirituality. Really nice, actually. I can hook you up, if anyone's interested! Let's hear more from the 2004 crowd! Where are you guys? What up to? much love, Emily --------------------------------- Stay in the know. Pulse on the new Yahoo.com.
