Message-ID: Hi all, Chelsea Martens asked me to forward the following message to the alumni listserves. -juju Recruitment and Outreach: Update from the RNC part 2!? From: Chelsea Martens (chelseamartens@gmail.com) Sent: Tue 9/02/08 2:58 AM To: Judith Wolert-Maldonado (juju70@msn.com) Chelsea Today we (Jonny-no, myself, and two first year students: Rose Pelzl and Nic Viox) hit the streets for several hours standing in solidarity with over 50,000 protesters from around the country calling for an end to war, occupation, and injustice. Throughout the day if became very clear to us: people are not only exited to hear about what we're doing in Yellow Springs and want us to succeed, but it became evident to us just how much the worlds needs Antioch. No other educational center dedicated to "winning victories for humanity" exists in the US today, and it is necessary that we win this struggle. We literally handed out thousands of flyers showcasing our Fall course listing and provided information about Nonstop - and people were excited!! And I believe that if we all continue to utilize our networks of organizers, activists, artists, musicians, families, and friends, we will have no other option but victory! There is a world ready to know about what we are doing - and this world is ready to support and engage in our work. We are providing the perfect response to a world facing much turmoil: an educational community dedicated to critical inquiry and charged with a great sense of responsibility, dedicated to fighting for peace, justice, and human rights. Trust me folks, the world is waiting for us to invite them to be a part of the amazing educational program that is the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute, that is Antioch College. There is certainly one very, very important thing you can do to ensure the success of Antioch College: help with outreach and recruitment for the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute. Keep on the look-out for an "Alumni and Admissions" page that will be located on the nonstopinstitute.org website soon! Email me if you'd like to be added to the alumni list of folks helping to get the word out. More updates from the RNC soon! in nonstop solidarity! Antioch College alum David Ramm will be leading the tasting in a beautiful and spacious photography studio, located in a fully accessible building near Union Square. We will taste eight wines from around the world, many of them from organically or biodynamically farmed vineyards, all of them from people unwilling to bow to the wine world?s prevailing wisdom. Released into a market that demands sameness and quietly forgives manipulation, these handcrafted wines offer brilliant specificity, distilling the place, time, people, and traditions that produced them into approachable, compelling wines for everyday meals and special occasions. Experienced wine tasters will discover little-heralded and often underpriced wineries and wine regions, while people with limited formal tasting experience will be given an unusual but well-grounded starting point for a lifetime?s exploration. ABOUT DAVID RAMM: Having first tasted wine in Yellow Springs at the home of music professor John Ronsheim, David went on to take Ronsheim's Art, Wine, and the Five Senses course and from there set to working in the wine business in New York, Ohio, Virginia, and North Carolina. He has taught dozens of wine appreciation classes for businesses and private groups and as an instructor in Duke University's continuing education division. He is currently the editor-in-chief of AMS Press, a small, scrappy scholarly publishing company based in Brooklyn. For anyone who had the privilege of being in one of John Ronsheim?s classes, you know the lasting impression he left on all of our lives. We will raise our glasses in his honor this evening. In order to maintain the integrity of the experience we are limiting the tasting to 25 people. RSVP required by Monday, September 15th, 2008 RSVP to antioch.nyc@gmail.com or to 917-864-2951 with complete address, email and phone contact information to reserve your space. Friends, romans and J. David Coldren! It has been too long since I have been on alumni chat...I have been talking to many alums one on one and through Facebook......where I am lucky enough to have 431 Antioch friends.(hooray) ..I didn't mean to forget "you all "..and I do miss alumni-chat..However, Facebook is a great tool for networking...and there are almost 1000s of Alumni photos on galleries there now.....you can go on facebook and the alum you are talking to is in Argentina or Yugoslavia...oh those restless Antiochians...that travel itch.... Summer in Yellow Springs is on the wane and the humidity is hopefully gone until next year...early Fall brings fresh mornings and brilliantly warm afternoons. It has also brought returning students and some new students....orientation was held at the Senior Citizen Center in the "Great Room" and also at the Methodist Church Fellowship room. The first Community Meeting with be at the John Bryan Center.....weeeee. This past weekend the annual Jazz/Bluesfest for AACW (African American Cultural Works, a Yellow Springs non-profit ) gave us all some festive moments..it is held around the Miles Budd Goddman Amphitheater and the golf course and the Antioch Area Theater.... The air was filled with blues, jazz harmonica, and the smell of ribs, fish, sausage, onion rings and funnel cakes. Dave Chappelle, at one point, had some fun on stage as well as he introduced one the world's best blues harmonica players. I sat at the NONSTOP booth for most of the afternoon and Seth Gordon, another Antioch College alum was holding the McGregor booth right next to us. Many folks stopped and wished us all well and said they were sad that the campus was so desolate and astounded that that could happen. Folks from the region and locals took information and expressed interest in taking courses. Among them were some members of a group called the Jafa girls. Yellow Springs, of course has more than its share of artists and writers.. (Lawyers and psychologists too).....Anyhow, there is a group that is becoming nationally known for their knit-knot performance art. (Jafa girls) If you stroll through downtown YS you will notice that some trees and telephones are covered in bright wool tapestries.. Local knitters are adding local color and whimsy as well....since some the trees are are covered in pieces of recycled sweaters...some trees have colorful pockets... seems like the pockets make for a little extra interactive art. People even stick notes in them. A to do list? Johnny loves Mary? Some of the Jafa girls (the knitters) have decided to take NONSTOP drawing courses or ceramics.... So it seems the village and the nonstop institute will create some symbiotic moments and show indeed that we becoming an even more "closely knit" community. For those of you who want a great escape...Yellow Springs and many of us are still here and doing what foks have been doing for 156 years. Teaching and learning....for the love of learning....and hoping to change the planet for the better. October 20th will be a Learning Festival Week...and the leaves may be at their peak as well. Speaker series and performances! Come and check out the local color,,,,, trees..with leaves and colorful wool tapestries...and colorful and intelligent folks... From Duffy '77 who appreciates all that remains and knows what potentialities there are. And make godo use of cyberspace,... antiochians.org theantiochpapers.org nonstopinstitute.org facebook ysnews.com youtube google video....please type "I beseech" you in the search box..for a great 28 minute video documenatry and keep the kleenex close. and be sure to call an Antioch friend just for the heck of it... ah heck!
