But within the confidential confines of Antioch University these plans have been discussed at length beginning in October 2007, with no public meetings to engage the Antioch community or Village residents. On April 3, 2008, the Yellows Springs Village Council and the State of Ohio received an official notification from Antioch University stating "the University is moving forward with its plan to suspend operations of the entire college indefinitely...." With just 28 days before the start of the College's indefinite suspension, Antioch University officials have still not publicly discussed its campus shut down plan. In order to further the conversation the Antioch Papers presents Antioch University's Antioch College Suspension of Operations, Implementation Plan, Confidential Draft, Internal Document to be reviewed by Counsel, Revised January 2008. What should you expect if you come? ( and I hope hundreds of you will) I guess that the first thing that might come to mind is a "sleeping giant".. The campus is getting very quiet.....it is lonely but lovely. Often these days you will see folks strolling or dogwalking across campus or even lost rollerbladers or bikers from the bike trail nearby who find some of the benches...simply nice and irresistable resting places. I would imagine the grass will be mowed for the most part.....although several folks have opted for early departure which means..staffing is slim and it takes awhile to cut our parklike lawns. and within a couple of fortnights we will be down to a skeletal staff of 9 or 10......which includea The Antioch Review and a couple of Glen Helen people. The power plant will be off.....but Aimee has found a wonderful luxurious upscale porta potty for the masses.....which includes amenities like basins, mirrors....ac it reminds me of a set up I saw at a State Park in Charleston South Carolina.... You should expect a large revival tent!!! You should expect lots of passionate Antiochians of varying vintages and varying viewpoints on how to move forward. and who also have great lifestories to share.. You should expect a daytime average high of 82 and a nighttime low of 62. but know Ohio weather can be cooler or hotter. Sunsets after 9PM !!! You should expect a slighly more upscale downtown YS than you remember....and can find great eats...and great cups of coffee...ah civilization. And YS still retains that slightly left of center weltanschaueng.....art galleries, second hand stores, green living stores..... and some old Pete Seeger types...and peacniks, quakers and hippy like types...maybe a few punkers too. and there are 1,000's of acres of greenspace for a a partial getaway..Glen Helen, John Bryan and the Gorge. And beware...they have put snapping turtles in the pool below the cascades.......no jumping in...or watch yer toes and the ranger As usual you should expect to rewind, unwind or get wound up. Of course...brainstorming will happen and hopefully you would expect to be involved there. Box lunches from the emporium btw...are usually fairly tasty and also well presented......expect them to be tasty. Reunions tees are pretty nice and I expect to get at least one.... Finally you should expect to have a great weekend that is slightly to the left of exciting. We need everyone's brains and hopefully their hearts. I'm an 18-year-old Serbian citizen who was lucky enough to find Antioch before it was murdered. I had dreamt of coming to America since I was 8 years old. I do not come from a family of money or power, just an upbringing of Serbian determination and high expectations. I made my dream come true through hard work and good luck. While participating in a high school exchange program in Columbus, Ohio, I finished two years of school in one year and maintained a 4.0 grade average. When Antioch accepted me for my first year of college, it was with a full ride and no understanding that institutions so generous or open-minded were in fact a rarity. Antioch became my home and my family, and last year, my first year at Antioch, was the greatest year of my young life. I'm in trouble now. With Antioch's closing, I have been left homeless. I desperately want to stay and go to Non-Stop Antioch, but it is not accredited, and without an accredited institution, my Student Visa becomes invalid. I have been offered acceptance to Goucher College and Marlboro College, with generous scholarships of up to 50% of tuition and housing. Unfortunately, the other 50% is far beyond my family's capacity to pay. My Student Visa does not allow me to work, and no American bank will give us a loan. If I am to continue living my American Dream, if I am to carry on the spirit of my Antiochian home, I must also find here the spirit of community that I knew there, and ask you, my fellow Antiochians, to be part of the effort. Please excuse the lateness of my request. I have to say, I was very much surprised when other colleges did not match the funding I had been awarded by Antioch, and I am only now aware of the corner I am in. I have been admitted to these schools, and Goucher College seems the most generous and accommodating of them, but I do not have all the funds I need to go there, and I must show proof of appropriate funds in order to be admitted. I need your help. I need to find people who want to see that Antiochian Spirit passed on even after the college's death, people who care about a little Serbian girl's dream and want to make it a reality. I left for Serbia last Wednesday. It is my hope to come back as a student and a life-long Antiochian, though I was never given the opportunity to be an Antioch Alumna. In the meantime, my contact information follows: E-Mail: dinafejes@gmail.com. Skype: alogia.burek With your help ? large or small ? I will be back in the fall, making the same high marks at a new school and finding a way to preserve the legacy of our home. Without it, I will not be able to return to America for at least two years, and my victory for humanity will be even further beyond my reach. I look forward to hearing from you, and to making you and Horace proud. The 900-plus signed onto a petition circulated by an alumni group, Antioch College Action Network, that is being presented to Antioch University trustees at their June 5-8 meeting in Keene, New Hampshire. In June, 2007, under the direction of Murdock and Zucker, the Antioch University Board of Trustees voted to suspend operations at Antioch College effective June 30, 2008, triggering a remarkable outpouring of alumni organizing and fundraising to keep the College alive. Last month, after nearly six months of negotiations, the board narrowly rejected a deal with alumni major donors which would have allowed the College to continue operating. Alumni involved in the negotiations have said the University negotiating team, led by Murdock and Zucker, repeatedly obstructed a resolution. The petition states: ?Chancellor Murdock and Chair Zucker have failed in their stewardship and fiduciary obligations to safeguard the future of the College. We are calling for their immediate resignation from their positions, either voluntarily or by action by board members who recognize the failures of the past and the need for change in leadership.? Additionally, the resolution calls for the Alumni Board to craft a business plan for the transfer of assets from the University. "The Antioch College Alumni Association stands ready to continue Antioch College as a residential, undergraduate four-year liberal arts program with shared governance and a tenured faculty," said Nancy Crow, President of the Alumni Board. "We thank the University Board of Trustees for making the decision to turn the process over to the elected representatives of the College alumni. By doing so, they have ended ten months of anguish." Matthew Derr, a member of the Executive Committee of the Alumni Board, said, "As Antioch College moves forward with plans for its independent future, we acknowledge the accomplishments of the University campuses and their programs. We hope that they will continue to flourish as they follow their own paths." When asked how this resolution differs from previous agreements, Crow replied: "This is startlingly different. This is a resolution supporting complete independence from the University. Additionally, the Board of Trustees is asking the alumni to create the process, not to work within a prescribed process." She continued, "I know I echo the feelings of many alumni when I say how grateful we are for the courage demonstrated by the Board of Trustees by this decision. We look forward to ensuring our process moves forward swiftly." This resolution comes two weeks before alumni around the world are to come to Yellow Springs for the College Reunion, June 20 - 22. Crow said, "We need alumni to come to campus to help the Alumni Association Board craft the plans needed to create a well-funded, vigorous and vital Antioch College for the next 155 years-at least!" Puh-leeeese! These are NOT sincere or honest people, or at least the main leaders aren't....Art Zucker '55, AU BOT Chairman of millions and guile, electronics man of wealth from North Carolina....Toni Murdoch, CEO of Antioch University....top on the payroll person at Antioch, anywhere. The thing to due is look for hidden agenda items. What can they be? Well.....let's not forget about money...the AU BOT never does, and claims that's the main reason they shut down Antioch College, Ohio. If/when they actually turn over Antioch College Ohio to anyone, not much of monetary value is likely to be left..."Yes, you can 'have' Antioch College, Ohio....No, you can't have everything, certainly nothing hockable!" It's very likely the AU BOT will WITHHOLD important parts of traditional Antioch College Ohio property....and only give what's left over to...well...to whom, actually...is the Antioch College Alumni Assn. a group of educators and administrators likely to do well at making a horserace out of Antioch College Ohio after all the battering of the past year? The AU BOT may just be dumping unwanted garbage sans good stuff the Antioch Alumni leaders agreed to fork over but haven't yet admitted or announced. Let's think about obvious issues part of the whole saga of recent times: Toni Murdock, Antioch University CEO of fame, wants to run a modern, internet "Phoenix University" type place which is what's selling these days to no-money people....school w/o dorms or any undergrad life....classes and credits and jobs like teachers and lab managers at the end of the tunnel. She wants money to fund it all...and raiding Antioch College, Ohio's residential campus is way to do it. How much of Antioch College Ohio is she (and her allies on the AU BOT) willing to give up? She's got plans for the valuable part of Antioch College, Ohio....it's unlikely the plans include giving valuable parts away. Who knows what "conditions" the AU BOT demanded (and got) from the always user friendly (to the Antioch U. BOT) official Antioch College Alumni leaders. Last year, John Feinberg, then president of the Alumni Board, kept the 2007 Reunion from turning into a revolt against the AU BOT. He stage managed the Kelly Hall meeting he ran on June 22, 07 to favor the Antioch BOT and Mr. Art Zucker, whom Feinberg treated not as the rat Zucker is and with the contempt Zucker deserved, but with all the reverence and high diplomatic protocol reverved normally for an ally and good friend at the ambassadorial level. A true revolt might have broken out during the 2007 Reunion, but it didn't, thanks largely to the expert stage management of Mr. Feinberg and the Antioch College Alumni leaders, and the fact that the title of "official opposition" to the AU BOT closedown threat was seized by people quite respectful of the AU BOT and willing to go along with ground rules the AU BOT demanded and set up.....this accounts for why the AU BOT closedown plan went off a month EARLIER than scheduled (June 2008 rather than July 2008) after a year of failed "negotiation." The same thing will happen with the coming (two weeks) 2008 Reunion, now run by Alumni Board leadership who want to sell the new AU BOT offer to visiting alumni, and who will STOP revolt, as the same group did last year. Once again the stage management welcoming potentially peskey and revolutionary Antioch College Ohio alumni will stop the revolt, and after the steam is drained off from the 2008 Reunion group meeting, the AU BOT can back down, again. Just like they did before. They promise plenty, play for time, deliver nothing. None of this is pleasant to state or think about, but it IS a realistic assessment of what's happening and who Antioch College Ohio alumni are dealing with. This is a time for critical thinking and hard boiled decisions difficult to make....not "feel good" joyousness and the conclusion that the bad guys (and their friends part of the Antioch Alumni Assn. leadership, who have such an obvious track record of enabling the power of the AU BOT, and never seriously challenging that power) are after all not such bad guys after all. I've written more about all this on WWW.AntiRecord.Org and haven't been flattering in summing up the failed work of the "saviours" who saved nothing over the last year. Visit the WWW.AntiRecord.Org site for details, which are not optimistic. I gave bad reviews to the "leaders of the opposition" and I still think those reviews are justified, and explain why the AU BOT has once again proposed to draw out the current soap opera by playing "Let's Make A Deal" with these same discredited (by me on WWW.AntiRecord.Org) leaders. Best wishes, Tex (aka Yazz aka David) Allen '66 (717) 235 - 1982 TexAllen@Hotmail.Com 644 Shrewsbury Commons Ave., #239, Shrewsbury PA USA 17361 > Date: Sun, 8 Jun 2008 13:59:17 -0700> From: mglavin1@yahoo.com> To: alumni-chat@w3.antioch.edu> Subject: [Alumni-chat] news from BOT meeting in Keene, what does it mean?> > What does this mean? No, it isn't a realistic assessment. It is polarized and overly simplistic. It ignores the richness and complexity of relationships and networks involved. These networks are not simply made up of alumni association leadership. Many are made up of a mix of alums, current CG staff, former CG staff, faculty, college staff, village residents, former students and future students (,etc.). Not all of them agree with the AB all the time, yet they recognize the value of working with one another even when disagreements exist. Just a quick note from YS....and then who knows? We are rapidly approaching reunion and June 30th...don't know what word works semantically best for me. Maybe hibernation or dormancy...and exile. Yesterday evening there was an impromtu or serendipitous gathering or picnic on the back stoop of main building...facing the horsehoe. Yesterday was originally faculty "eviction" day. Faculty were told to get everything out of their offices...or stuff would be thrown out. So the picnic was planned as a moment for folks to be with each other. (The deadline has been extended to June 16th) Of course....we have had our first brief heat wave and on top of that it seems like something breaks down in one building or another in rotation. Some more paranoid folks think this is also additional psychological warfare...but I think it is because we are virtually without staff already. For example, the library AC works about every other day or every other hour ..(ain't working right now but folks are down there with duct tape and bandaids) .and McGregor's had totally fried last October...so the second floor of that building was brutal. I went over yesterday to help Hassan Nejad for a moment..and was soaked through within five minutes. Older faculty should stay hydrated so they don't passout while they pack. Yesterday it seemed like the breezes were coming straight from the equator...but by 5:30 there was some relief and in the shade you had it made. Since I am a type A person I arrived at Main Building promptly at 5:30 with a casserole dish of organic carrot salad. (mmm, but with pineapple, raisins and miracle whip) . I bumped into Lori Askeland, a Wittenberg faculty and YS Council member who also must have been a type A..we said to each other "Well, where is everyone?" Well , gradually folks gathered...with covered dishes, blankets, chairs. we wound up using the concrete ledge of the back steps as a buffet table.....and eventually as folks arrived..the ledge filled up with all sorts of bean salads, tabbouleh, fruit, baked beans one one lonely tuna salad. (when I got home and told my other half...I was asked.."Where was the meat?" Well at most Antioch gatherings..the fare is sorta healthy.. although no one brought any tofu concoctions yesterday. Thank God!) The back steps were shaded by a large oak...and the view under it was of an emerald green and clover- studded lawn....where kids played while the grown-ups chowed down and chatted...some sitting and some standing. At 6:30 or so there was the start of a brief program (informal) of speakers. Each person spoke about ten minutes. First Lori Askeland spoke about the buildings and their historic legacies and how the entire campus was on the Historic register and much of YS as well. and how Lori was amazed at the College's energy during the past year and how she made many new friends..young ones....and how to her the toxic culture theme was more myth than actuality. She stated that the village council should try to pass ordinances for preservation for the campus and the town historic district. Then Scott Sanders spoke and gave the history behind the the origin of Main Building's archictecture...and style......by going back to upstate NY well before 1852. And then Glenn Harper..a member of the Ohio Preservation society talked about the histories of the various buildings but also what Antioch has meant to him...since he was himself..a 1985 graduate...of the non-tradtional sort...meaning as a student he was not part of the 18-22 age brackett. He got involved in history at Antioch by studying its history and while he was a student studied with John Rury and managed to get published even as a student by writing an article with Rury about women at Antioch in the "day". The article: The trouble with Coeducation: Mann and Women at Antioch, 1853-1860, by John Rury and Glenn Harper. History of Education Quarterly, Vol. 26, No.4 , Winter 1986, pps.481-502. after Glenn spoke....the three academic chairs of non-stop ...Hassan Rahmanian, Chris Hill and Susan Ecklund-Leen spoke about how we may losing the venue...for an interval...but how a core of faculty, townsfolks and others with alumni support intend to continue and nurture the core values (sans venue) of the Antioch experience. Classes and Community Meetings will be held throughout the Community...in churches, the senior citizens center...with the town and others putting deeper meaning into community and experiential education. Since much of what is happening is outta the box....we are working with terms that seem crazy to many.....we all need a thesaurus, eh? so the dreadful temporary word executive collective for the three faculty is being used. The idea is that of sharing power and leadership. ..and is not intended to seem out there. Indeed some courses sound scintillating. Dennie Eagleson and Don Wallis, for exampe, will be teaching a combined photogrtaphy and journalism course. And I tease Don Wallis (former award winning YS news editor) about one of his books which was about a dirt poor black community in Indiana...entitled "All we had was each other" I will tell him "all we had was Don Wallis". After the first set of speakers Beverly Rodgers, Prof of Anthropology went to the tree on campus that was planted in memory of her daughter...and then many of us went to all the trees and benches that have histories behind them. (including John Graham's and Louis Filler's) One tree was planted in memory of Nolan Miller, my freshman advisor..who pinched our butts long before you were mandated to aways be appropriate. BTW many folks have had their ashes strewn on campus..so it is in a way, hallowed ground. Just a hadnful of years ago,. for example,at reunion, Eleanor Drey, Deb Goodman and Peter Thomsen came with Larry Steger;s ashes and put them in places that Larry loved..including near the Art Building...and as some slightly irreverent but loving Antiochians...put a spoonful or so of Larry's ashes in some ashtrays. Larry. it seemed, just loved to smoke. By 8:30 the picnic was winding down...and the summer evening felt delicious with soft breezes and golden sun as thunder clouds built in the west to break the heat wave. The drive back to ole horrid Dayton was Okay....a quilt of corn and wheat...Ohio has some pretty moments. And it was good to see an old friend...Harold Wright 's (retired Professor of japanese) daughther Rose was visiting....she is also an eighties' grad. I had not ...seen her in 25 years...she had schlepped all the way from Hawaii. Please excuse syntax and any typos...thunderstorms last night and stress kept me from getting a real night's sleep. any old excuse, right? Just a little local color for friends.....and a tidbit of nostalgia and history. Much love to you all. Of course....really no adminsitrative types came last night. I wish folks had enough fortitude to share our feelings. But I guess we are all human and some of this is sorta painful. Duffy '77 and the decades since. Matt and Flora and Catherine if you have time please pass this on. ......and hello to John Feinberg..wherever you are........ back to grinding up 32 years of timeslips...some when I made 5.25 an hour and worked 95% time...would not trade any memories at all. sining the old song that Fred and Ginger song "No, They can't take that away from me" From marklp2 at comcast.net Tue Jun 10 16:35:55 2008 From: marklp2 at comcast.net (Mark Pomerantz) Date: Tue Jun 10 16:35:57 2008 Subject: [Alumni-chat] values and venue In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <00ea01c8cb39$965275a0$0201a8c0@home84c77b9b4f> Don't worry Duffy, There will still be an Antioch. Message-ID: <002101c8ce55$8ab02200$a0106600$@net> I just got through looking over the "sign up list" for the Antioch College 2008. I see a few familiar names. Part of me wishes I could be there. Another part agonizes over the carbon footprint of the event. I hope the Alumnae Association isn't depending on this event as a "kick off" for the process of picking up the pieces after the AUBot has trashed Antioch College by its actions over the past couple of years. Frankly perhaps the greatest evidence of the board's breach of its fiduciary responsibility for the founding institution and its' history is the recent complete abdication of responsibility for anything more than closing down the campus and purging the existing staff. When they declared financial exigency, they chose not to organize or support and encourage the organization of a "crisis fundraising" process which could have probably kept the doors open and preserved the institution. When I first heard about the situation, I speculated that the board intended to manufacture a crisis which would draw out enough donations to save the existing program. Once they had dragged things out long enough to insure that the existing Antioch College program would lose its faculty and accreditation, they were willing to abandon all responsibility to the Alunmae for the now much more daunting task of planning and creating an independent and self-governing Antioch College. For a year, the AUBot was sucking energy and effort out of a core group of people focused primarily on trying to "save" the existing college rather than addressing the more daunting task of resurrecting and renewing it. The "2012" proposal made at the time of the declaration of financial exigency did commit the institution to a planning objective. By recently turning over the planning and execution of any business plan for an independent Antioch College in Yellow Springs to the alumnae, they have abandoned even lip service to responsibility for an eventual Antioch College program on the campus in Yellow Springs. They remain in a position to sabotage and drag out the planning process for an independent and resurrected Antioch College by haggling over the details of any proposal which emerges from the Alumnae who were organized this past year primarily in a struggle to achieve what the board apparently did not really want, namely, to keep the existing college functioning. The task for the Alumnae is now much more daunting than it would have been had the AUBot been at all responsible and willing to accept proposals to patch up the AU governance system in a way which the Antioch College alumnae donor community could accept. Now, instead of saving an existing institution, the Alumnae must organize to create a new one pretty much "from scratch." I wonder how many of the pledges made over the past year will evaporate or have already been withdrawn? How many of the organizers/donors were willing to commit to a clearly understood objective of "saving" Antioch College, without the burdens imposed by the termination of the existing ongoing program? I'm afraid that we as the collective alumnae community simply will not have the energy and resources to perform the much more daunting task of creating a new liberal arts college program from scratch. Was this exactly what some members of the AUBot were willing to support in their struggles to keep their pet program entities afloat? Will any of the messes created along the way, for example, encumbrance of existing Antioch College "old money" endowment funds to guarantee bonds for McGregor, rise up and bite us at some future juncture? Maybe the answer really is and always should have been, throw the existing board out and start over with one willing to be responsible. A "donor board" with a $1m membership commitment? The figure of $25,000 in annual support from the entire AUBot, it seems to me, is clear evidence that the existing board members long had abandoned fiduciary responsibility for the institution. Maybe the Alumnae should sue to take control of everything instead of pleading for approval for some yet-to-be created business plan. E. Right. This was obvious to me last June 2007 but not to the group which seized "leadership" of the "save Antioch from the Trustees" movement. They did it their way, and lost, and we're all stuck with that. I have no doubt Antioch College was (when Dan Ayres and I attended Antioch in the 1960's) the best possible undergraduate college to obtain the best possible education and life foundation anywhere, probably in the history of education, anywhere. That said...what happened? Why didn't the people who obtained "the best anywhere" education and life foundation at Antioch College save it....put less formally, why are such large numbers of Antioch College alumni part of the "save Antioch" movement such screwups and failures when "push came to shove?" After due thought....I've concluded that Antioch grads may have OBTAINED a good (the best) education at Antioch, but over time, they (many/most) failed to RETAIN what they got at Antioch. The bright, smart as hell people I attended Antioch with, my fellow Antioch alumni, lost what they got at Antioch.....stopped being street smart, stopped being quick to recognize problems and quick to figure how to escape from those problems. Ativisism set in. We've had the big game lost by loser Antiochians who weren't able to hold onto what Antioch gave them. Education at Antioch or anyplace is a "use it or lose it" thing. This is all food for thought. Amerika has become so awful that even bright Antioch College alumni get crushed and crippled over time. It seems that many Antioch alumni turned into people who could run, but they couldn't hide. Education and the kind of gifts and wonders Antioch College Ohio bestowed upon us all is fragile, and means nothing if people don't hang on to what they got during childhood and formal education in the years that follow. Being big winners at age 22 for many of use with our newly awarded Antioch degrees doesn't mean much if time and a rough world erodes away ability over the decades. The smart 22 year old kids I knew in large numbers at Antioch College Ohio 40 years ago wouldn't have let what's happened happened. Wouldn't have let the bad guys win, which has happened without a doubt. And no 60's Antioch College Ohio grad like Dan Ayres would write about this tragedy and stick the best sentence, the smartest conclusion he was flirting with, at the very end of his writing. Put the best sentence at the start, make it the first line. Old rule of first class journalism, first class information delivery. Ramapo is a distinctive public liberal arts college with a mission and educational philosophy similar to Antioch. I joined Antioch College almost 28 years ago. During this time, I have worked closely with faculty, students, staff, College and University administrators, the alumni, and external institutions to make Antioch realize its goals. These goals included providing a liberal arts education, the integration of theory and practice, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural learning, international understanding, and experiential education. I served Antioch in several capacities: Professor of Political Science and International Relations, department chair, Chair of the faculty, Coordinator of AEA programs in Egypt, Dean of the Faculty, Executive Vice President, Chair of the Strategic Planning Task Force, AdCil member, Per-law Advisor, and International Student Advisor. My years at Antioch were among the best of my life. I learned a lot from Antioch and became a better teacher, administrator, mentor, colleague, advisor, and, above all, a better person. Antioch helped me reevaluate my attitudes toward education, politics, social justice, human rights, the environment, community, family, race relations, and gender issues. Thank you all for a rich, rewarding, and unforgettable experience. I am optimistic that Antioch College will be revived and admire those colleagues, students, administrators, and alumni who are working so hard to make it happen. Even though I will miss you, I am looking forward to a new challenge in my life and to starting a new career at Ramapo. Best and sincerest wishes for success in rebuilding Antioch and in your futures. I look forward to hearing from you. I can be reached at my Antioch email address or at hnejad@ramapo.edu. I replied to him, ? I am not too surprised, because to be too surprised would mean that I didn?t have enough hope to believe in what we are doing. And I very much believe in what we are doing.? Yet, even though I am unbelievably inspired and simultaneously humbled by the work of Nonstop Antioch, my heart is still breaking. My heart is breaking because throughout this last year, and still currently, the dignity of the people who make Antioch College has been cast to the side. And so, I wanted to use this moment as an opportunity to honor the humanity still present in this transition into Antioch?s future. When we are locked out of our buildings, denied the ability to pursue our life?s work, and forced to transfer to other institutions; our humanity is being systematically and intentionally denied by those who reside in positions of power. When our home is threatened, when our family is under attack, and when, throughout this process, our humanity is ignored, our complexities as people have been rendered insignificant. It is unfair and it is inhumane. I know that I am among the many who realize how crucial each of us are to the success of Antioch College ? and from the bottom of my heart I have nothing but gratitude and respect for each of us ? staff, faculty, and students ? who make Antioch College what it has been, what it is, and what it will be. Perhaps my heart is not breaking, but breaking open into new possibilities for the road ahead ? a road I have the deepest faith in, because it is paved by a fantastic legacy that we have all contributed to. And nothing with this much beauty and this much to give to the world could possibly fail. I hope that we remember to reach out to each other and to hold the hurt, the pain, and the sadness that we are all feeling. And I also hope that we remember the inspiration, the love, the community, the vision and the possibility that we have at our finger tips, because we are surrounded by the most incredible and capable community I have ever been lucky enough to be a part of. This is an appropriate time for retrospective words, thoughts shared between Antiochians and Antioch advocates. Here's a post I provided recently about "what it all means" for one of the Antioch College Ohio websites (WWW.AntiRecord.Org .....started in 1998...the oldest one): -------------------------- Will Antioch College Ohio Reopen After Closing In June 2008? Probably not, sadly. The facts...without tears....Wed, 1969-12-31 17:00 June 16, 08 Hi from Tex (aka Yazz aka David) Allen '66 (Email me at TexAllen@Hotmail.Com): Antioch alumni I've been in contact with have emailed me recently and asked if Antioch College Ohio will reopen after being closed down by the Antioch University Board Of Trustees in June 2008. I've replied to several people, and laid out the facts as I see them briefly, and hopefully without tears. The closing of Antioch College Ohio is a terrible (and unneccessary) tragedy, but it appears to be a done deal. Time to face up to that, and move on....respectfully. Here, FYI, is the text of my summary of what happened, and why. I may not be correct and Antioch College Ohio may indeed re-open again soon or at least someday. I hope that happens. Meanwhile, here's what I've replied to Antiochians who contacted me, asked if Antioch will re-open, and "what happened?"------------------- I think it's very unlikely Antioch College will survive the current closedown imposed by the Antioch University Board Of Trustees. I wish it weren't so, but I see no evidence to the contrary. The current Trustees seem intent on closing the school down (for a variety of no doubt unstated reasons), and no serious challenge to their closedown decision has been mounted after one year. When they announced the closedown decision last year (June 2007), they (the Trustees) were on extremely shaky ground and quite vulnerable to challenge and displacement. The passage of time (one year by now) has changed that. The Trustees now hold the "high ground" and the closedown news is no longer new and shocking. I believe the Trustees anticipated the violent reaction to their closedown decision, and stage managed things effectively, also recruited allies in the camp of those who seized leadership in the challenge to the closedown. They waited things out, set up ground rules and overall assumptions never challenged or overturned or even widely disputed, networked with key opposition people with great success, and otherwise "pushed the buttons" of Antiochians active in the challenge to the closedown decision in ways beneficial to the Trustees. I wish the final results were otherwise, but I don't think things will change. The passing away into history of Antioch College, Ohio is sad, but it is one of those occurances which any student of cultural and educational history knows about. Immortality isn't part of the history of cultural institutions like Antioch College, Ohio....nothing lasts forever. Best not to let your heart be broken about what's happened. Antiochians who valued what Antioch gave them will keep the memory of Antioch at its best alive, at least during our lifetime. You think it's dead? Great. Move on, then. The rest of us will be keeping on agitating and organizing over at Antiochians.org -- tragically in vain, I guess, but hey, we're stubborn like that. It's much easier to stand on the sidelines and report 'objectively' on how things should have been done and declare failure instead of actually getting your hands dirty and working to try to save the college. We all define how much we care about Antioch by our actions and the work we put towards the effort and Tex has spent many many hours blaming everyone from the Board of Trustees, the Alumni Board, the AC3 and all the current staff and faculty for the failures to date. His work and volumes of writing on these lists and antirecord.org speaks for itself. I encourage him to keep posting as much as he wants so we all know exactly where he stands and with what authority and experience he speaks from. Meanwhile the rest of us who actually care enough to try to help the effort can keep busy making a difference. -Matt On Jun 17, 2008, at 11:18 AM, J. Greg Williams wrote: > Psst. I'm active in the Organizers, Communications and ACAN email lists and have not had time to check up on this chat list. Anyway, I am copying to here a thread that I began in the ACAN & Organizers lists. After the posted message I will add some updates. It will be a lengthy read and I apologize if it gets reformatted by my email server... Point is, come to YS and camp out! With latrine-digging & rain-protecting survival gear in tow, even better! In solidarity, Judith "juju" Wolert-Maldonado, non-traditional '05'er Tent City, anyone? and 10-day forecast for Yellow Springs. From: Judith Wolert-Maldonado (juju70@msn.com) Sent: Mon 6/16/08 6:22 AM To: acan@saveantioch.org; organizers@antiochians.org Hi all, As I'm a YS resident & AC alumna, several out-of-town alumni have asked me if I know of any plans for a "tent city" at this weekend's alumni reunion. The questions asked have been, "Will it happen?" "Who is organizing it?", "Will there be access to hot showers in the gym and toilets at night?" and "Where can we put up our tents for the whole week/weekend without being asked to leave by someone? - The former spot of Presidents dorms? The Horseshoe? The Golf Course?" (some were concerned with the Golf Course being too isolated, therefore a little scary at night. The Presidents lawn seems to be a good spot where folks might not get kicked out, perhaps? If it could be on the Horseshoe, I believe it would be the most ideal and impactful.). I don't know the answers. Does anyone in CG, alumni relations or elsewhere know the answers? If so, could you please post them here as soon as possible (Monday or Tuesday) so that travelling alumni could have enough time to plan accordingly with their gear and sleeping arrangements? As for an organizer of tent city, I would hope that once the location is named, it could just grow unto itself, yes? I second the hot shower/toilet accessibility question for folks! Unfortunately, my involvement can't go further than putting these questions out there, as I'm hosting some folks in my home & doing other things... As the following Weather Channel ten-day forecast for Yellow Springs shows, Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday nights seem like the best nights to camp out; Scattered thunderstorms are predicted for the rest of the days. Which leads to another question: Could the gym be another option for campers to sleep in, in case of foul weather? I could not find a non-Antioch email for Judy Kintner, regarding this question (Jill Becker is copied to this message). Could Jill or someone else please forward this to her? Thanks! I look forward to seeing you all, juju Judith Wolert-Maldonado juju70@msn.com The 10-day forecast: http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/tenday/45387?from=36hr_topnav_business (my email server might reformat the following into a jumbled mess...) It is my class, 1983 25th Reunion. I hope a few of us will be there. I saw on the schedule that there will be a Memorial Service for Antiochians and Friends on June 22nd. If I were there I would want to light a candle for Alana and Annie who never graduated from Antioch College. May Peace be with them and their loved ones still coping with the loss. Their families and beloveds have been in my heart this year wondering how they are feeling regarding the suspension of Antioch College and the fight to save it. As alumni grapple with the continuation of Antioch College. I am still asking what are we saving? The history of the campus has not been a bed of roses. There have been some real thorns that are not just about individual problems but are systematic and have had consequences that should not be glossed over. Those on or near campus in the spring of 1984 know the loss we all felt. We got punched in the stomach and shaken into pathos. If I were on campus this weekend I would attend the memorial on Sunday and I would light a candle for Alana and Annie and after all these years I would still weep. May their loss be remembered and may we also understand that Antioch is not just about victories--that there have been real tragedies--dare I say sacrifices--in the last 30 years. Not all for the good. We need to think about that too. It is not just about fighting some enemy out there who is abusing us. Institutions are bigger than that. Antioch has not been in good health for a long time and it has had its impact. I say this not because I want the place to close. I love Antioch College: its history, its place in American Education, and the amazing Antiochians I have known across the generations and years. Annie and Alana are included in that long line of amazing Antiochians and I wish they got to have a future. I have wondered if they had been someplace else, they might still be with their families and friends and blessing us with their smiles. I have never heard of such an action. Has the AAUP? Emeritus is an honorary title, meaning retired, usually given to professors at the end of their academic careers. Bob, in my eyes this means you have not quit academe and will continue for many years first at Non-Stop and then at the revived Antioch College. Eventually (When you choose to stop teaching for pay) you should become Emeritus President and Professor. Art Dole, '46 On 6/17/08 6:19 PM, "Cdelairre@aol.com" wrote: > Bob, > > This is an outrage. The whole higher education thing offered to and even required of all in a democracy who are capable of it is a big luxury and not a little utopean. Creating a world of intellectuals and culturally aware and active people and expecting major portions of the population will be part of it all isn't realistic, and maybe never was. Antioch itself was, certainly from Antioch President Arthur Morgan's time and leadership, an effort to create an alternative to the usual formula for creating cultural, intellectual people via dumping kids in their late teens onto a college campus for four years. Antioch did offer travel and variety during times when cheap travel and low money living was still possible..but those things aren't with us any more. Colleges are cultural institutions and traditionally sought to husband cultural results NOT shared or even valued by other (cultural) groups. The current climate and ethic which compels toleration and nurture of all cultural makes cultural chauvinism not a little ridiculous...yet without it, there is no motivation by leaders of cultural institutions to grow, expand, etc. I think current higher ed (and lower ed, for that matter) schools are driven by overpopulation and the fact that parents create childen they have no use for or future/estate to provide, and childcare places are welcomed and paid for.....as a means of separating the unwanted, unneeded, unplanned for kids for home in some gradual way which sort of denies the point that kids aren't wanted, were a mistake to generate in the first place. Nobody serious really thinks anymore (if they ever did) that higher ed gives anybody a better life in the world...... For people without non-educational connections and mentoring, life after higher ed is and will always be rough.....just means than one becomes poor with a grasp of culture and information rather than po
