Hi from Yazz (David) Allen '66 (Email me at YazzAllen at Yahoo.Com):
A few reactions, words, etc. to comments about the ANTIOCHIAN in different formats people made since my last post (two hours ago!):
First, I'd like to come "out of the closet" and reveal myself as an opponent of ....Cyberspace....ALL of it. This isn't realistic, I'm the first to grant, but...that's how I feel.
PRINT you hold in your hand on paper, read in your easy chair AWAY from the computer is the best of all, and my sincere belief is that Antioch would/ will get MORE attention from alumni by spending the US Postal postage and printing costs to get PAPER and PRINT not sent by a computer/ Internet into the hands of alumni.
The whole Internet thing has become (and this will continue geometrically) so overwhelming and suspicious and awful, that people regard most of what they get as "junk mail," and they're right most often. I fight off SPAM daily, but it's a losing battle, and my fellow Antioch alums do, also.
SPEND the damned money on the US Postal service while it still exists, and Antioch alumni will pay attention they'll NEVER pay to email, cyberspace transmitted stuff.
I thought Sister Sara's words about the "Happy Talk" PR stuff in alumni publications in recent years were (Sara's words) "right on," as we used to say in the 1960's (does anyone still say "right on!", any more?)
Publications which tell the unpopular and unattractive parts of the "News" are the most trusted, and most likely to connect with readers. The NEW YORK TIMES, etc. etc.
The feuds and controversies at Antioch (always present, thankfully...speaks well of Antioch.....I doubt if Cedarville College down the road from Antioch has controversies about Gay grafitti on the walls of ITS Student Union!) are important and interesting. Should be covered, and good practical results occur when the controversies ARE included.
I always thought the LACK of a "Letters To The Editor" which printed the opinions of dissenters reading THE ANTIOCHIAN was a big hole in the publication, something missing which should have been part of it all.
I transferred to Antioch College from the University Of Virginia in 1962, and am regarded by UVA as "an alumnus from the class of 1965" even though I was there only one year (1961-62).
The rich, rich UVA has raised THREE BILLION DOLLARS during the last decade and spend a lot of it sending jazzy, slick magazine type alumni publications, filled with sound and fury and signifying NOTHING.........talk about "happy talk"! Check our UVA's awful alumni publications.
Really confirms I was smart to leave UVA and attend grooby, with-it Antioch, a choice I never regretted!
Alumni publications say a lot about what a college is and was. Antioch's should be terrific, and have been in the past!
Best,
Yazz '66
