Frankly, I hope all Nuclear Facilities have very strong security, and I
suppose that includes former members of DELTA force. I have seen two serious
security incidents at Nuclear Power facilities, privately owned and operated,
where serious problems occurred because of security folk being into drugs, and
drugs being present in the security facilities and the control room. These
are not recent -- they were back a decade or two -- but they were serious,
including the involvement of some of the security people in a drug ring involved
with bringing drugs in from Columbia, and blackmail of the security people
to protect the group involved in the importation.

I dislike a public policy that builds ever more powerful nuclear weapons
with the rest of our crowd -- but the place to attack this is in Congress. If
the University of California doesn't manage Lawrence-Livermore, another
University will walk in and take over the contract -- or they will create a private
equity company to do it at a huge private profit. In fact, one of the first
things Bush did in 2001, was try to remove the contracts from UC, and move
them to Texas, and with some he succeeded. I distrust, and personally
protested the ending of the Professional Security Service of the Department of
Energy contract for security at Los Alamos, and the substitution of a rent-a-cops
outfit like Dynacorp. I don't think Blackwater should be sub-contracting
this kind of security service.

In the end, this is a political policy matter -- and the responsibility is
in Congress. That is where you focus your effort. At any Nuclear site,
including private power generating stations, there is waste material that could do
huge damage in the wrong hands -- and Congress needs to be responsible for
making clear the kind of security that is required. They need a public that
tells then not to farm it out to private security firms who offer the lowest
bid.

And yes, sometimes late at night I wake up and decide to do something of
interest such as checking out my E-Mail. The joy of the internet is that you
are not necessarily a 9-5 person.
