I actually feel more hopeful since yesterday's community meeting than I
was before it. Since November, and the agreement in principle, power had
been taken away from us, it was as if things weren't in our hands anymore.
I think this situation was very profitable to the University because many
people felt paralysed by the fear of doing something that would compromise
the negotiation and our fragile promise of staying open. This
"immobilization of troops" benefited the University by letting the
momentum go down and meanwhile, time was passing by and we were going
towards april at an alarming pace with no resolution in sight.
I think the University, in clearly announcing that we were closing, made a
strategic mistake that is going to benefit us. (Maybe Andrzej was aware of
that and that's why he didn't want to make it sound as dramatic as it
actually was.) But today in the Emporium, townies were talking about
Antioch closing. Barbara Danley affected police patrols around McGregor
today (because, of course, we have nothing better to do than storm the
bunker on the other side of town as a vengeance...) and the alumni
listservs are awake again... Resistance is re-building. To me, this
electroshoc is the best news since November.
