Hi from Yazz Allen (email: YazzAllen at Yahoo.Com):

Thanks Art Dole '46 (husband of Marge Dole, the most beautiful co-ed ever to attend Antioch College during the 20th Century!) for proposing the need for more spotlighting of Antioch College Presidents Algo Henderson (1937 - 1948) and Douglas MacGregor (1948 - 1954).

Both are important, and Iwould ALSO propose a great un-met need exists to discuss and remember US Senator Simeon Fess (Republican - Ohio) who served as Antioch College President from 1903 to 1917. (Fess successfully ran for US House Of Reps in 1912 and won.....he served in the House DURING his Antioch College President years after that......served in the US Senate in late 1920's/ early 1930's and helped Arthur Morgan during Morgans TVA startup times....sponsored Morgan into a VERY ritzy men's club....the COSMOS CLUB..... in Wash. DC.,, which became Morgan's HQ when TVA started w/Morgan as its only employee. Lowell Fess, son of Simeon, earned an Antioch degree in 1915, and was BIG political activist in YSO in the 1950's....his right wing newspaper is illustrated in Scott Sanders recently published Antioch College history book, which ALL should buy...still for sale by contacting Antiochiana c/o Kettering Library at Antioch, YSO).

One interesting similarity between Henderson (1937-1948 Antioch President) and MacGregor (1948 - 1954 Antioch President) is they were BOTH experts in business.
Henderson earned a Harvard Business School MBA, the same degree the current USA President holds from the same school! Mercy!

MacGregor taught at the MIT Business School and returned to it after his 6 years serving Antioch. In 1960, MacGregor wrote a famous book titled THE HUMAN SIDE OF ENTERPRISE which suggested business should be humane. It was the toast of the 60's, and so was MacGregor. THEN, MacGregor and his great, humane ideas book was / were displaced by the evil and terrible Peter Drucker with his book titled MANAGEMENT, which returned business and the trashing of ALL business ethics and aspirations to serving humanity to the Dark Ages, where it remains today.

But...MacGregor's fame and the fame of his book was big while it was big. But business people are always cut-throats, and so MacGregor's book, THE HUMAN SIDE OF ENTERPRISE went the way of all good things. Too delicate and wonderful for the ways of the current USA world...the world of "Amerika," as I'm often criticised for calling "America."

Both MacGregor and Henderson were children of sensible, down to earth, practical Arthur E. Morgan, one of the great Saints in Antioch and also USA history. Antioch worked find during the watch of those two because they were good at what they did....keep their eye on the ball, and grew Antioch in many good ways.

MacGregor's son, Peter MacGregor, Antioch '63, was the Community Manager when my geezer father, David Roger Allen '66, entered Antioch College in 1963. My Dad states that Peter was a terrific folk dancer, one of the best on the campus during times when Antioch Folk dances ROUTINELY numbered several hundred on Red Square on warm Friday evenings, or cold ones during Curl Gym Folk Dances during the 60's. (Read about ANTIOCH FOLK DANCING on WWW.Google.Com by using that search phrase).

Best,
Yazz (David) Allen '92
