Sister Sara!! it goes to show you how inadequate e-chat is because
people seem to take what they read and absolutely go somewhere in their
own minds. Interesting places!!!! but well off the
beaten path.....
I would never make any sort of "romantic rosey" (nice allliteration)
about the payless paydays or even this year's events because I have had to
suffer through them and suffered through them with
friends and co-workers.and the students ..some of us have known each
over forty years..folks like Al Denman, Connie Pelekoudas, WaltTulecke,
Bill Houston....Nina Myatt and countless others.
many of whom btw still spend long winter hours enjoying the BIG
OLIVE...and every now and then we will squeeze in some laughter....like
when two emeriti meet and laugh and synchronize
their hearing aids.
These are some wonderful people...brought to you and kept by institutions
that keep tenure in regard.
Throughout the years immediately after the payless paydays we were
momentarily so poor. Many of us worked near and even below the poverty
line for a family of four..but
we were rich in the intangibles, eh.
A local author named Don Wallis has wriiten a book about a struggling
Black town in Indiana..and he titled it "All we had was each other"..
I have always felt that this title could also belong to this community.
If all we have is each other....we have had it pretty good.
During those bad times I had only one pair of gym shoes..terrible for a
runner. and only one or two pairs of pants.
Joe Cali, btw...tried to be helpful and gave me one of his "dress"
pants. they came from the local clothing clearing center (I am sure)
and were styleless and pure polyester..
oh how horribly dreadful but deliciously nice of Joey...
and I did wear them a couple of times. As happens when you are scuffling
to get through...one day I washed the Joe pair in the kitchen sink and
then hung them over a chair
near the heating vent..and then took a ten mile run. When I returned
the house was smokey...the pants had fallen onto the vent and sorta became
parchment.
Needless to say those scorched pants went into the garbage...I opened the
windows and took two sighs of relief..one that the pants hadn't caught
fire and the other that
I wouldn't be wearing those low-slung brown polyster nightmares ever again.
Never did tell Joe...... (good story to tell now since Joe passed away one
year ago tommorrow..) a pretty good friend....but not known for haute
couture..
One thing about the payless paydays was that everyone was equallly
in the soup unlike the events of the last year.
Both the turmoil of 1979 and now show that there is some love for
the institution that endures inspite of all the imperfections throughout
the years......and even the perceived Golden
Antioch of the 60's and 70"s had deep institutional flaws down below that
surfaced as the Institution tried to become more diverse. There was
institutional racism and homophobia (and
it is still hiding in cracks....so if we make it through all the
hoops..maybe we had all better try to help the CSK center...that may be
the institutional catalyst that with some small pushes
could fix much that has been wrong here...and maybe even deal with the
current generation's anger when the flaws of racism, homophobia or
trasnational corporattions are
examined. and maybe we will also learn to be open minded if the next
generation"s J. David Coldren shows up.
I don't look for any McCain rallies here.
Maybe some day we will make "romantic rosey" over this year's tsurris!!
Yours from the Big Olive (Kettering Library)... Crazy Duffy '77
P.S. I seem to remember someone telling me that WYSO's license might be
worth 25 million...and that was told to me years ago when I was still on
the Alumni Board and while
Steve Spencer was plastifying WYSO. might be more now.
