OK--now I am picturing it. "68 Cafe" had closed its doors by the time I arrived in town but I can imagine it.
Yes, I lived in YS through the whole transformation to a bedroom community for Dayton thanks to 675 by-pass and a ambitious Chamber of Commerce president (also a "golden years" Antiochian) Whether it has been for the better or worse will be left to long-term community residents to decide rather than the transients. Given the demise of Antioch, I doubt the Village could have thrived without these developments.
Yazz, your knowledge of post 60's culture is a bit sweeping if you characterize HA-HA's as an upscale pizza shop. I would certainly beg to differ.
Does anyone on chat know the genesis of Ha-Ha's? The Ha-Ha's of 1979-1989 I considered ahead of its time--although it wasn't NY or even Columbus, OH--it was still a good slice of pizza. Those Ha Ha pizza makers and entrepreneurs were anything but upscale! I have often wondered if the California pizza craze started in YS and moved West--probably not but it certainly seemed cutting edge for my midwestern palette. I love Ha-Ha's even better than Sven & Ole's in Grand Marais, MN.
Yes, time does march on leaving us to wax nostalgic. As far as hair dye (and maybe campus tramps?)--there are many younger than 68 using it. Although I haven't conducted a survey, I seriously doubt there are many 68 year old Antiochians (tramps or otherwise) at Wal-Mart beauty salons. If Wal-Mart is like Great Clips they do no color jobs--too slow for the Mc World of hair dos. Most poor women dye their own hair--they may buy the dye at Wal-Mart but they do it at home with the help of a girlfriend or sister or daughter. Just speculating. I am sure most vintage campus tramps from the "golden years" are fairing better than their grandchildren and if they are dying their hair they are going to a spa. Again just speculating.
Are there any Underground Antiochian beauty parlor stories? I know of at least one--but my lips are sealed--beautician licenses can be revoked for Underground activity. Of course some memorabilia is not going to be collected considering the archivist.
I must also state that during my tenure in YS I only met two truckers. Neither were engaged in professional activity--nor seeking out homecooking of the diner sort. I worked right on 68 and rarely saw a semi. Perhaps interstate log jams have increased in the last 20 years and YS has since developed a stream of smart truckers once again traveling the old routes. I am sure someone will pipe up with a much more nuanced or factual account of the trucking industry in YS than my small anecdotal observations.
Yazz, do you always like to over-generalize? You do much better when you stick to facts or even gossip.
All the Best

> It was located in downtown Yellow Springs, Ohio on Xenia Avenue right next to the railroad track crossing of Xenia Ave. Down near Joe Holly's Cleaners and the "Bakery." Located on the western side of Xenia Avenue. A sort of upscale Pizza Shop seems to be located there presently, part of the newly (since the 60's) created "Yuppie" ambience of Yellow Ssprings, Ohio, which has become one of the big Yuppie locations/ destinations of the Greater Dayton, Ohio area in recent times. Real estate has skytocketed in YSO, poor people can't afford to live there anymore, and the shops and eating places on Xenia Avenue cater to the newly arrived rich people, and have a noticeable case of the "quaints" not seen in past times.

> If Linda Shepherd of CAMPUS TRAMP were a 20 year old "Clifton College" (Antioch College) co-ed in 1959, she'd be 68 years old this year! How many ladies of those times with Linda's love life history (never admitted in their old age!) now visit today's WalMart hair salons to get the grey shoved out of their hair, and muse that grey hair removal never crossed their minds back in 1959?

> Today's Interstate Highway system is choked with overcrowded traffic. I live very near Interstate 83 which goes from Harrisburg PA to Baltimore MD USA and is almost gridlocked at 3 AM daily when it becomes exclusively for truck traffic. Smarter truckers learn about the old US Highway system (including US 68 from Cincinnati to Detroit) and use these old road in preference to the newer (and often more crowded) Interstate Roads.
