Hi from Yazz (David Roger) Allen '66 (YazzAllen at Yahoo.Com)

An Antiochiana artifact (a book) is being sold presently by WWW.Amazon.Com. It's a book written by an 1867 Antioch College professor of Ancient Languages (Latin and Greek) who anthologized slave songs. The book is still in print.....140 years after it first came out!.

The Antioch professor who wrote the book is a collateral ancestor of mine (David Allen '66 writing this), and is named William Francis Allen (1830 Mass. - 1889 Wisc.). Bio information about him is available in most encyclopedias.

He taught at Antioch for one year in 1867, then moved on to a big career at the U. of Wisconsin.

He finished his college degree at Harvard U. in 1851, then travelled to Europe and taught for brief periods before and during the Civil War.

The book he provided about SLAVE SONGS OF THE UNITED STATES came out the year he taught at Antioch College in Ohio.

He was assisted by Lucy McKim Garrison, daughter in law of William Lloyd Garrison, the very famous editor/publisher of an important abolitionist newspaper called THE LIBERATOR.

Garrison's son was Wendel Philips Garrison who was editor of THE NATION from Civil War times to the start of the next century, and Wendel married Lucy. Important people during the Civil War era.

William Francis Allen taught ancient languages (Latin and Greek ) at Antioch College, Ohio for a year in 1867, then went to the University Of Wisconsin, where he taught, wrote Latin textbooks, and stayed til he died in 1889.

He wrote an interesting preface to his SLAVE SONGS book I am reading now.

I have a pretty big personal collection of Antiochiana, and urge others to collect Antioch history and memorabilia. It's important, and if Antioch College disappears thanks to the current trustees, memories of Antioch College should be preserved and passed on to future generations.

The current Antioch University trustees might succeed (intentionally or unintentionally) in killing the school, but hopefully they can't succeed in killing memories of it, particularly if memorabilia is preserved carefully by alumni.
