Hi from Yazz (David Roger) Allen '66 (YazzAllen at Yahoo.Com)

Thank you for the interesting history about the connection between Antioch College President Arthur E. Morgan (1920-36) and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Thomas K McCraw states in his TVA AND THE POWER FIGHT 1933-39 (Lippincott 1971) book that "James M. Cox, Roosevelt's old running mate from 1920, suggested Morgan for the TVA chairmanship. (Cox was) Governor of Ohio in 1913 during the Miami Valley Project, Cox well remembered Morgan's great achievement.

McCraw also sites Eleanor Roosevelt's interest in Antioch College during the 1920's, but asserts that the Cox recommendation gave Morgan the job offer to head the TVA.

I believe I've read that FDR and Eleasor both visited Antioch College in 1931 during Roosevelt's time as NY Governor. I got this from a book titled FDR'S UTOPIAN: Arthur Morgan of the TVA by Roy Talbert Jr. (1987 U. Of Mississippi Press) in which I remember seeing a photo of the Roosevelts at Antioch College in 1931. Don't have the book at hand, and therefore can't say positively, but I'm pretty sure I read about the 1931 trip to Antioch, and saw a photo about it, most likely in Talbert's book.

Both the McCraw and Talbert books are worth reading for insights about Morgan and his connection with Antioch College. The McCraw book is anti-Morgan and pro-Lillianthal in its conclusions about the fight between the two men, but gives solid details which could have supported pro-Morgan conclusions.

  Best,
  Yazz Allen '66
