It seems to me that the market for co-op-type jobs has changed dramatically.  Now, internships are commonplace, but I don't get the impression that this was true in the past.  Increased supply of interns could create more competition for the higher paying jobs and could reduce the average wage of internships in real terms.  Ironically, focusing on a few cities would be one way to increase the odds of securing good (i.e. "meaningful") jobs and better living conditions.  Obviously, there are a number of other factors worth considering, such as housing costs, tuition, transportation and the like, but it seems worthwhile to also consider the changes in the marketplace for co-op-type jobs in this discussion.
