My experience of Straumanis as a fundraiser is distinctly different -
she urged us all, at an alum gathering in NYC early in her tenure as
president, to give "at least a thousand" and anything smaller wasn't
worth it. Not an effective strategy by any stretch of imagination
and it struck me as being totally out of touch with the reality of
her audience (specifically a "young alumni" event - many of us were
still paying off student loans at the time. A welcoming and reality
based plea for any amount would have been a reassuring change - and
much more effective).
