Well, well, well.
Here are a few of my thoughts about various posts:
1. Has anybody ever heard of hybrid vigor? It is real. Pure-bred can't compete. If it could, Mario Capecchi wouldn't have had to spend so much of his time isolating genes. Well, OK, perhaps that's a bit too simplistic but you can get my general drift.
2. Laura: if you think the main problems have occurred since 2001, I strongly disagree. The state of our college has been very weak for a very long time. We were going broke for a very long time. Just ask Rick Daily after he checked our hallowed financials.
3. I wonder where everybody was before the closure announcement. Why didn't more alumni donate $ all along? Does anybody else think this was also part of the problem....a BIG part? I remember reading the Antioch '92 chats for a long time and seeing various students (who are vocal now) talk about how angry they were about things going on and how they would never give a penny to the college. Sheesh. I also remember urging Joan Straumanis to urge all alumni to give, even a small donation, as many grants were based on the number of alumni who contributed rather than the amount donated. She did. It didn't help much. Are many of us Monday morning quarterbacks? Yes. Now we revel in pointing fingers at the University. Yes, many folks wouldn't give because of the University but then why didn't we organize before disaster struck?
Things to think about.
4. JD: be as angry as you want. I promise it won't get you anywhere.
5. Andy: Thank you.
Deb
