I always knew that there was a hidden wild streak in that Eisenhower
generation.
Smoking!!!! I would hazard to guess folks were carrying on with more than
just 3.2 beer......
When I first came to Ohio......I discovered that...a brand called
Blatz......how descriptive!!!! and Strohs....which
is shorts spelled backwards.....my generation drank something called
Ripple ......like soda pop!
Not only did you fifties' children smoke....you wore spike high heels......
Under the carpet by the circ desk at the library the tiles had many tiny
half moon marks wedged into the tiles.
I used to ask Joe and Bruce Thomas. What's all those marks in the tile?
They said "High heel marks from spike heels"
I found that incredible...since most folks in the later sixties wore
sandals or boots or nothing...on their feet
Hence my favorite Joe Cali line for barefoot folks "Hey, you're gettin the
floor dirty!"
Back to spike heels ..Imagine all that weight focused down into those tiny
heels. No wonder folk's feet hurt!!! enuf to put gouge marks
into the tiles....how many lbs per sq inch. yowwwww
And let's straighten someting out before folks run off into the land
of hyberbole.
The library is not very moldy at all. There is some mold in the
air...but it is Ohio.....the carpet is dusty because it
needs to be shampooed or replaced with tile again..(and don't
worry...folks don't wear those dreadful heels much
anymore....only at themed Div dances where the fifties is the theme. and
if you wanna laff and feel like alta caccas....some Div dances recently
have had 80's or later themes. (Old skool?)
One party was an Olivia Newton John workout party...let's get
phsyical.!!!
We had a new airconditioning system installed a few years ago...so it
keeps the mold down.
and the roof was fixed about ten years ago.
There are some wall issues in the back by the parking lot and a few cracks
in the foundation here and there.
The Big Olive has about 1/3 million volumes and access to 30 million
through Ohiolink, a marvelous journal collection
which is Joe's legacy......and of course many thousands are also out there
electronically.
With the help of a good librarian...the world is yours...and if you simply
stroll in with a minor need like a
Spanish-English dictionary or the MLA style manual......we can do that too.
Yours from the Big Olive and its surroundings..
