Hi from Yazz Allen '66 (YazzAllen at Yahoo.Com)!
Thanks for the explanation about "Pelicans" on "Star Island."
During the 1960's there places around the country which were "Antiochian" without being officially part of Antioch College. Part of the socially liberal culture of which the Unitarians are a famous group and expression. But it goes beyond just that group or just Antioch.
Circle Pines Camp in Michigan was one such place. It attracted a lot of Chicago area liberals, featured international folk dancing of the sort done on Red Square at Antioch.
The Clearwater Ranch in Mendicino County, California was a famous Antioch College co-op job in the 60's (child care work for emotionally disturbed children) which had sort of a "Summerhill" personality, and was set in the Redwood country very near the Pacific Ocean coast, and the town of Mendicino, CA, a seacoast town which itself was famously "Antiochian."
The Pacific Grove/ Carmel/ Big Sur Claifornia area was similar, and the University of California Santa Cruz campus had sort of an "Antiochian" personality. San Francisco itself did before the "Manhattanization" of the town which infused skyscrapers and off-the-chart rental charges for little guys, just like the actual Manhattan on the east coast, once populated with many more Antiochians and Antioch "types" than can now afford it.
The Black Mountain College community in North Carolina was another such place. The Goddard College community in Plainfield VT was another (I hitchiked to Goddard during a 1964 Antioch co-op job at Yale U. Med. School I had during my undergrad days at Antioch, folk danced there with Goddard students, and was surprised by the similarity of the two schools).
They (big money hustlers and the ownership class) might shut Antioch down, but they can't shut down the Antioch "idea" or get rid of all places where it live.....and makes people like me happy!
Best,
Yazz
