[Alumni-chat] Britain and France carved up the Ottoman Empiretogether, and the gift of Antioch to Turkey was part of the carve up! [Sent on 11/10/07 at 22:16:01.]

This obviously is not a productive interchange. There are too many
simplifications in your version of history. Your inaccuracies are perhaps
best captured in your reference to "Turkey´s Ottoman Empire". What later
became Turkey was only one small part of the Ottoman Empire and for most of
its history the leaders of the Empire weren't of Turkish ethnicity.

Hi from Yazz (David) Allen '66! (YazzAllen at Yahoo.Com)!

Thanks for Stan Morse's words about the part of France turning Syria's
important ancient city of Antioch (renamed "Antakya") to the Turks.

Prior to WWI, Syria was part of Turkey´s Ottoman Empire, which had the
bad taste and bad luck to side with Germany, which got defeated in that
famous war..Syria was occupied in 1920 by France, in accordance with a
League of Nations mandate.

Both Britain and France were anxious to hold onto their empire offshore
holdings, and expand them, which is how the Ottoman Empire real estate they
got from winning WWI got used. Part for France, part for Britain, etc.,
etc.

The behind the scenes smoke filled rooms at Versailles were certainly all
about the winners getting control of the land lost by the losers of WWI,
and, as usual, the crafty Brits were big players in deciding who got what.

With respect, it isn't accurate to state "Britain had nothing to do with"
Antioch's (Antakya's) being given to Turkey. Britain was in the thick of
everything part of the Treaty Of Versaille and the League of Nations
mandate.

Britain gets involved in everything international.....most recently as the
Bush administration's number one supporter and helper in the current Iraq
War.

  Best,
  Yazz (David) Allen '66
