After Word War I Antakya was in the part of Turkey controlled by the French.
There was supposed to be a plebiscite, which was never held. France gave
the area to Turkey in return for Turkey's supporting French policies in
Syria. The British didn't have anything directly to do with this. Syrian
maps still show this area as part of Syria.

Hi from Yazz (David) Allen '66 (YazzAllen at Yahoo.Com)!
Thanks for comments about the ancient city of Antioch (located in Syria
for most of history until the British re-drew the map of Syria and stuffed
the ancient city location into the extreme southern part of Turkey which
borders Syria.......ancient Antioch was a big symbol of Syria as a major
power, and the British may have decided to "give" the city of Antioch to
Turkey to keep the Syrians from getting ideas about getting free of the
British Empire in the 1920's, when Antioch was "re-located" due to boundry
re-drawing and given to Turkey....which changed the spelling of its name to
Antakya....different spelling, same place).
It is true that the ancient city of Antioch gave the early Christians a
break by not feeding them to lions or otherwise persecuting them. But this
was not due to special preference for Christianity, or any kind of
recognition of it as special or superior among the many religions of the
world and/or the Middle East of ancient times.
The ancient city of Antioch tolerated everyone. If the Hare Krishnas had
shown up in ancient times (instead of in New York City in 1967, when they
started out in Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan's Lower East Side), the
ancient city of Antioch would have let them "do their thing," and NOT
persecuted them or kicked them out of the city. EVERYBODY was invited "to
the table."
That was very educational, and that's what the city wanted. Obvious why
those in the know about ancient Antioch would use the city as an educational
ideal.
Ancient Antioch was a famously interesting place.....just like Antioch
College has always been at its best times.
Best,
Yazz (David) Allen '66
