The union staff who lost their jobs are:

2 people in admissions
1 area assistant
2 library positions

The people in the union are protected in that they have specific rules
under the contract as to what they can expect in the way of severance,
bumping rights, etc.
They are NOT protected from having their jobs eliminated.

This is really hard on us in the Library as we are now down to 1 Librarian
(with the promise of a 1 year visiting position to be hired) and 3 staff
members. If the one staff member gets the job as the visiting Librarian
(he just got his MLIS), there will be 2 staff people in the Library -
Duffy and me. We lost Joe in February (which is like losing 3 people), a
cataloger and a part-time Librarian whose last day is Friday.

When classes begin in the fall, how are we supposed to keep open the
normal 90 hours a week that we used to. There's no way to give service
with that few people, not the service this Library prides itself on.
