[Alumni-chat] Skills bank update

With very little prodding, I've received more than 25
skills/knowledge/committment profiles from fellow alumni.

Among other things, I've been asking people how many hours per week they
could commit, and the mean response is 4 - which means that if we can
mobilize efficiently, the equivalent of 2.5 full-time people has been
pledged in addition to the financial committments that people have made.

The skills bank forms will be on the web soon, I believe, but if you have a
minute, please get your information to me using one of the attached forms.
Thanks!

Once the court battle shakes out, and

 IF

the judge says that the Chancellor and BoT were perfectly within their
rights to close the college, and that the promises made to the faculty were
so much balloon juice...

Then the money raised and lots more of it should be used to endow a new
residential, progressive, democratically organized liberal arts college.

Your thoughts?

(Why drag Mark into this? Because I thought maybe I was being a defeatist
nut until I re-read his post. He's right.)

(This was the e-mail I sent out to the contact list created out of the
Yellow Springs focus group meeting, as part of the larger Saturday community
meeting held at Kelly Hall during reunion week. If you have any
suggestions, ideas and/or sudden brainstorms for this group, please email
them directly to me at juju70 at msn.com as I live in Yellow Springs and plan
to continue to work with and be one of a few facilitators for this group
long-term. Thanks! -Judith Wolert-Maldonado)

Hello all!
This is a reminder for the Wednesday, June 27th, Future of Yellow Springs
Meeting at 7pm, TODAY, to be held at the Coretta Scott King Center on
Livermore Street (across the street from Antioch College's Main Building).

A big, hearty thank you to each of you for having stuck it out and
participated in our impromptu focus group meeting last Saturday in the AEA
office at Kelly Hall at Antioch College! Thank you for your interest,
energy, passion, ideas and commitment to keep Yellow Springs a vital
cultural center for the Miami Valley and to remain (and grow as) an
economically stable, positive & thriving community for its residents,
business owners, visitors and Antioch College community members.

Here is a quick re-cap of most of the action plans that came out of our
specific meeting and were shared later at the Kelly Hall greater community
meeting:
1. Write a letter to the editor of YS News (and to the YS community)
2. Hold town meeting within 2 weeks
3. Hold next meeting of this group on Wednesday June 27, 2007 at 7pm at
Coretta Scott King Center
4. Put pressure on the University to hold itself accountable to the village
of YS and its economic stability
5. Create positive community spirit to spread via signage, slogans, a web
site, and more community held events
6. (Long-term) involve YS residents in campus activities and open campus
facilities (art building gym, theater, library, King Center, photo house) to
the greater YS community
7. Hold a welcome-back festival for returning students in the fall of ?07

Another reminder, we talked of choosing a name for our group, so please come
prepared with some catchy slogans, etc. I look forward to working with each
of you, together. As was informally agreed on Saturday, future meetings will
certainly be open to many more people.

Please remember the famous quote by Margaret Mead, anthropologist:
"Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can
change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

In solidarity,
Judith "juju" Wolert-Maldonado, Antioch College alum
