Hi, Duffy, thanks, and many thanks too to all the others who did such a thorough job of keeping us on the Internet up to date over the hectic days of Reunion.
I realize we're in circumstances and a time frame that mean moving forward on several fronts at once--renewal plan, website, fund-raising. But where do we stand right now?
Someone (sorry, can't find it) suggested that we want to be in a position to take our 40 million and stipulate to the BoT what we want the college to look like. That outcome seems fairly unlikely, since the BoT may well see it first of all as a kind of blackmail. Is the fund dedicated to reviving the Antioch College that was working up a Learning Communities model, or the one that was displaced by that model? Having read the AIF final summary statement (thanks, Ilse), we'll be lucky to have the BoT even hold a conversation with the alums. Who is working on a realistic purpose for the fund-raising? (Maybe it could best be used to supplement the severance packages?) At the very least, unless or until we have a specific goal, contributors need to sign something recognizing that their contributions may be used to support any of various aims and will be kept informed along the way.
Similarly, setting up the 501(c)3 will take time; some donors won't want to give without it, maybe others will be precluded from donating unless we have it. It's a great idea to make a small donation now to show intent and raise the percentage donating. Even though this two-stage plan doesn't play along with the emotional drive to join the shivaree, seems like there are reasons to hold onto the big money until there's a clear statement of purpose, a sense of the possibilities, and a clear channel through which to donate. Not too long--give a month or two to sorting out the means and aims, then pitch in to tap all the sources and supporters we know. Does this sound reasonable?

i think some big donors, like foundations, can only give to 501(c)3 organizations.
