The community will provide connections for students to alumni and friends of the College as tutors, mentors, and experienced-hands that are nearby; assistance in job placement (done earlier on campus and in cooperation with Co-op faculty leaders); help locating housing; adjustment assistance (connecting to utilities, interest groups, social ties, etc.); all in all, an academic program aimed at deepening and making more sophisticated a students understanding of ?place.? Periodically, students get together to share stories, debrief, get support, find help in solving problems at work or in living situations. A program of ?professional development? is included that focuses on various matters aimed at improving student work performance such as working effectively with supervisors, getting some technical assistance for completing work projects, learning how to work within organizational policies and procedures, improving required writing skills, etc. These topics, developed by the Co-op Community Coordinators with a system of alumni support, can be tailored to individual or small groups of students with similar needs/concerns. Angie Glukhov, Associate Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, will discuss the vital role in recruitment that Seattle area alumni can play, and will address current and future trends in enrollment. The ice cream social will feature Young?s Jersey Dairy ice cream, flown in from Yellow Springs especially for this event. Please RSVP to (insert phone number) no later than May 10, 2007 to let us know you are coming. Antioch College Alumni Association Board Meeting Update March 2 -3 Bradley Wilburn Both Tim Klass and Bradley Wilburn were in attendance from the Seattle area. The Alumni Association Board Meeting was primarily held in the Glen Helen Building. Prior to our arrival a significant change was underway within the administrative structure of the college. Several positions were abrogated, due in part to an administrative realignment to streamline internal operations to help the college operate more efficiently and forestall projected financial shortfalls this academic year and into the future. Several key individuals, of note Jimmy Williams (Dean of Student Affairs), were laid-off. A number of students were upset by the layoffs and voiced their concerns with fellow Board members. Steve Lawry addressed this issue head-on early Friday morning, as well as sharing information surrounding Curriculum, environmental studies, his vision of global citizenship and social justice. He also addressed questions raised by the Board during our morning session. Mid-morning we gathered at the Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom to listen to Dana Patterson, the first Director of the Center, address her short and long-term goals for the Center. As envisioned, the Center will be open to the larger community as a resource and public assembly venue. The Center?s Mission and Goals are available upon request by visiting Antioch?s home web page. We participated in a panel presentation entitled; Curricular Development, that included Tom Haugsby (co-op community), Hasaan Nejad (Learning Community), and Christine Smith (faculty). The presentation provided lesson learned from the recent past and cast a positive light on the direction on the New Curriculum. An acknowledgement of the demand on faculty time was shared, but overall faculty, students, and administrators were pleased with the level of learning occurring within this collaborative environment. For more information about the New Curriculum, visit Antioch College?s home page and click on academics. Friday evening we attended a lively community meeting at McGregor. We were genuinely impressed with how the students conducted themselves in the heat of a highly energized moment. The hot bottom item was the recent layoffs on the campus. The following day the Committees (Association, Communications, Development, Nomination, and Reunion) had working session and report-outs to the general assembled Board that took up most of the day. I detailed report from the Committees and minutes from the general meeting will be forward to you in the near future. With the election of new Board Officers finalized, Nancy Crow ?70 President, Ina Frank ?60 Vice President, the meeting was soon adjourn until reunion weekend Our charge going into the Alumni meeting was to secure commitments for our next Seattle event. We want to be fully engaged in building Seattle?s Co-op Community and to that end, Tom Haugsby, Director of Cooperative Education, has agreed to visit Seattle and layout the framework. Student Recruitment was another target area we wanted to be more involved in; Angela Jones-Glukhov, Associate Director of Admissions & Financial Aid, will share the podium with Tom to address student recruitment in the greater Seattle area to build Antioch College.
